About this scheduled Safeguarding course

Domestic Abuse Training

This CPD accredited 2-hour course provides training on Domestic Abuse.

Domestic abuse remains a pervasive issue in the UK, affecting individuals across all demographics. Recent statistics reveal that approximately 2.3 million adults in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2024, comprising 1.6 million women and 712,000 men. Despite these alarming figures, it is estimated that less than 24% of domestic abuse crimes are reported to the police.

Why is this important for schools?

Children who witness or experience domestic abuse are significantly impacted in their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and academic performance. Schools are often the first safe space where signs of abuse can be noticed. Therefore, leaders and school staff need to recognise and understand the complexities of abuse, the barriers to seeking help and the impact on children. This course will further explore schools’ responsibilities and the role of multi-agency partners in reducing harm.

This session will cover:

  • The nature of domestic abuse and the tactics of abusers
  • Reasons victims of domestic abuse may remain in unhealthy relationships
  • The signs to recognise that might indicate an adult or child is experiencing domestic abuse
  • The impact of domestic abuse on children
  • Risk assessments, safety planning and support available for victims
  • An overview of criminal and legal pathways
  • The role of Operation Encompass and the responsibilities of schools

This training is assessed via a short quiz at the end.

The course is CPD accredited and participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
