A Day in the Life of a School DSL: Volume 2

Posted  17th April 2025

The morning bell rings, and the school corridors fill with the sound of chatter and footsteps. The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) takes a moment to sip their coffee, glancing at their meticulously crafted to-do list. But the day has other plans. A teacher approaches urgently, concerned about a student who has become withdrawn and distant. Instinctively, the DSL sets their list aside. Safeguarding, as always, takes priority.

The reality for many DSLs is steering unpredictable, emotionally charged situations that demand immediate attention. Their role is not about ticking boxes, it’s about making decisions that could profoundly impact a child’s life.

The Role of a school DSL

A school DSLs work requires an exceptional blend of empathy, decisiveness, and expertise. Their responsibilities include:

  • Being the first point of contact for all safeguarding concerns.
  • Assessing risks and determining appropriate responses.
  • Coordinating with external agencies like social services or the police.
  • Keeping meticulous, confidential records of safeguarding incidents.
  • Training and advising staff on safeguarding protocols to create a culture of vigilance and care.

Despite being key, the role is often misunderstood, operating largely behind the scenes to ensure the safety of every child in the school. With approximately 1 in 10 children in the UK experiencing neglect or abuse before the age of 18, the stakes could not be higher.

A Typical Day

No two days are the same for a school DSL. A plan can unravel within minutes as urgent matters arise. A typical day might look like this:

  • Triaging safeguarding concerns raised by teachers or pupils
  • Meeting with external agencies, supporting staff, and addressing ongoing cases
  • Conducting safeguarding training or planning interventions for vulnerable children
  • Finally catching up on administrative tasks, often well past school hours

Every interaction and every decision carries weight, often requiring a balance of compassion and protocol. Research by Education Support highlights that over 70% of DSLs report working additional hours weekly to keep up with safeguarding demands.

      Challenges Faced

The challenges faced by school DSLs are immense:

      • Emotional strain from dealing with sensitive, high-stakes situations daily takes a personal toll
      • Time pressures, balancing safeguarding duties with teaching or leadership responsibilities often leads to burnout
      • Resource gaps from limited access to tools, time, and personnel stretches the DSL thin
      • Inconsistent systems and multi-agency collaboration can be hindered by varying processes and standards

These obstacles demand resilience and a profound commitment to safeguarding. A survey by the Anna Freud Centre found that 59% of school leaders believe mental health concerns among students are rising, further intensifying the pressures on DSLs.

      What would help

To better support school DSLs, key changes are essential:

Protected Time, allocating dedicated hours solely for safeguarding responsibilities.

Advanced training/tailored programs that address the unique challenges of safeguarding in schools.

Integrated tools and streamlined systems for managing cases and communication.

A shared responsibility culture encouraging all staff to view safeguarding as part of their role, not just the DSL’s.

These measures would enable DSLs to focus on proactive, impactful safeguarding. Data from the Department for Education shows schools with well-resourced safeguarding teams report faster and more effective interventions.

Judicium’s Safeguarding Supervision Service provides essential reflective practice sessions to help your safeguarding team manage their workload effectively, meet statutory requirements, and address the emotional challenges of safeguarding children.

      Thoughts for the future

The role of the DSL must evolve to reflect its growing importance. The future could include:

      • Greater investment and funding dedicated safeguarding resources and staffing
      • Uniform standards of safeguarding frameworks to reduce variability across agencies
      • Comprehensive support ensuring regular supervision and peer networks for DSLs to share knowledge and reduce isolation

The role of a school DSL is often overwhelming but profoundly impactful. They are the unseen champions of children’s safety, making decisions that protect futures and save lives. With the right support, these leaders can continue to safeguard the wellbeing of every child in their care.
