Data Protection
Retention and Managing Information - How to make sense of requirements
In today's digital age, schools manage vast amounts of personal data, from student records to staff information, both in hard copy and digital formats. Ensuring this data is retained appropriately and managed effectively is crucial for compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Developing a comprehensive data retention policy not only fulfils legal obligations, but also safeguards the privacy of those within the school community. So how long do you have to keep this data? Does this requirement change depending on the type of data?
Any information that is no longer required must be disposed of securely to prevent data breaches and uphold data protection standards, so make sure to come along and keep up to date with regulations to ensure you don't get caught out.

Daniel Richardson
Daniel is a Data Protection Consultant with Judicium’s Data Protection Team. After completing an undergraduate degree in Medical Microbiology with Immunology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne he chose to cross qualify as a solicitor, allowing him the opportunity to help people more directly with his knowledge and experience than he ever could have from a laboratory.
Dan subsequently spent many years practicing mainly as a solicitor, working on a significant number of Data Protection claims, he later brought the benefit of this experience helping people to enforce their data rights to Judicium’s data protection team. Dan currently assists schools navigating the complex data protection landscape, using his experience of bringing data protection related claims to avoid these emerging in the first place. Outside of work, Dan enjoys travelling, particularly with a good book to accompany him, and enjoys playing and following football, despite the misfortune of being born a fan of Sunderland AFC.
